Good Boys Film Club is proud to present a screening of four films by artist, filmmaker, and poet Maya Deren: Meshes of the Afternoon, The Very Eye of Night, Ritual in Transfigured Time and At Land.
Unparalleled in the seismic force of her images, Maya Deren crafted vistas of shifting consciousness, utilising dance, light, and montage to shatter contemporary conventions of film. Eclipsing tired notions of meaning made standard by Hollywood fare, Deren’s work foregoes definition to revel in the frothing spume of shared dream, constructing an affectual and experiential collage frequently in conversation with the boundaries of gender, violence, and belief.
Her influence is widespread, inspiring the likes of David Lynch, Kenneth Anger and Barbara Hammer, concretising her place in the legacy of moving images. Little compares to the delight of witnessing an artist so attuned to the equal prevalence of violence and love running parallel to human activity.
