A Scalarama Film Festival screening + Leeds Cineforum's 10th anniversay bday party!
Instrument (1999) is an experimental documentary directed by Jem Cohen, who filmed post-hardcore Washington D.C. band Fugazi’s tours, rehearsals, member interviews and recording sessions between 1987 and 1998. The documentary mixes quiet, intimate moments and high-energy performances, such as singer and guitarist Guy Picciotto dangling upside-down from a basketball hoop during a concert, creating a compelling portrait of the band and their fans. The film successfully captures the reality of the daily life of a touring band beyond Fugazi’s mythical reputation and the misconceptions related to their non-violent and anti-capitalist views. Cohen’s mix of super8, 16mm and video aligns with Fugazi’s DIY ethos and style, resulting in a film that feels both aesthetically accomplished and authentic. Fugazi also recorded the soundtrack to the film, a mostly instrumental album that is widely loved by fans for its experimental and playful nature.
The film will be introduced by Alice Borchi (she/her), long-time Fugazi fan and ice cream-eating academic.
In the same DIY spirit, after the screening, we'll celebrate the 10th anniversary of Leeds Cineforum. We've got plenty of surprises in store, so don't miss it!
